Lake Nakuru was started as a bird sanctuary but it has been upgraded to be a rhino sanctuary as well as a Rothschild giraffe sanctuary. It is only in Nakuru that you can find such huge populations of this endangered Rothschild giraffe. The rhinos in Nakuru national park are easy to see and they like sitting just next to the game drive tracks which makes for easy viewing.
Tree Climbing Lions of Nakuru Game Drive
Nakuru park game drive trip is also known for its tree climbing lions that can be seen perched on the shorter acacia trees or on the fallen branches of acacia along the lake shores. No one has offered a satisfactory explanation why these lions have adopted a tree climbing habit.
The leopards in lake Nakuru are also very easy to spot even during the day as they slumber atop tall acacia trees or in the early morning or evenings when they can be seen walking alongside your game drive vehicle in the park. Once in a while you will spot a stripped hyena which is a rare occurrence and you get to add a feather in your cap.
